On Speech and Language: Studies for Sieb G. Nooteboom

Abstract

Sieb G. Nooteboom (born in Makassar, former Dutch East Indies, on April 19,1939) is professor of Phonetics at Utrecht University, and chairman of the Netherlands Speech Technology Foundation. After taking his position in Utrecht in 1988, Nooteboom served as director of the Utrecht institute of Linguistics OTS during its initial years. He was one of the founders of the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT). Before coming to Utrecht, Nooteboom held part-time professorships in Phonetics at Leyden University and at Eindhoven University of Technology (TUE). From 1977 to 1988, Nooteboom was co-director of the Hearing and Speech group at the Institute for Perception Research (IPO), where he started his career as a prominent researcher in 1966. The present volume honours Nooteboom's 65th birthday. It contains some twenty scholarly contributions written by fellow professors of phonetics and psycholinguistics in the Netherlands and abroad, by members of his current research staff, and by some of his current and former PhD students. The contributions reflect Nooteboom's personal research interests, and include, among others, prosody, on-line processing of spoken language (especially spoken-word recognition), speech planning and speech errors. This book should be of interest to linguists, experimental phoneticians and psycholinguists.
