Abstract

In this study, we investigated educationally relevant factors in organized youth sport that were hypothesized to contribute to on- and off-field antisocial and prosocial behavior of adolescent sportsmen. The study was carried out in a sample of N = 376 soccer players, 9 to 19 years of age. Multilevel analysis revealed that 21% of the variance in off-field antisocial behavior, and 8% and 14% of the variance in on-field antisocial and prosocial behavior could be attributed to characteristics of the sporting environment, such as relational support provided by the coach, exposure to high levels of sociomoral reasoning about sport-ethical dilemma's, and positive team norms of fair-play.
