Abstract
First I like to thank the organizers of the PME 37 conference for inviting me to act as a
reactor to this plenary talk of Doug Clarke. I hope that my somewhat provocative
thoughts are stuff for further thinking about the valuable work of Doug Clarke and his
colleagues. To put my critical remarks in the correct perspective, I have to tell you first
that we in the Netherlands have been always a bit jealous about what you did in
Australia and New Zealand. Although, we already started in the late 1990s with the
development of teaching‐learning trajectories with in‐between attainment targets, we
never did what they did, namely using these trajectories as an interview tool for
professional development of teachers. I think this is a missed opportunity for getting
better teachers.
