Abstract
A red organolead compound of the structure (Ph3Pb)4Pb has been obtained from the simultaneous hydrolysis and oxidation of ether-free triphenylplumbyllithium or diphenyllead at low temperatures. Its structure was established by analysis and by an iodination reaction which yielded one mole of lead diiodide and four moles of triphenyllead iodide per mole of Ph12Pb5; no diphenyllead diiodide was formed.
Krause's early report of the isolation of diphenyllead has been critically reinvestigated.
