Abstract
In this paper the semantic map methodology from typology is used to explore lexical variation. Building on Swanenberg’s (2000) study of bird’s names in southern Dutch dialects, I construct semantic maps for thrushes, larks, tits, sparrows and swallows. In this way the patterns of variation that we find in dialect dictionaries might reveal aspects of the conceptual structure that underlies and constrains this variation.
