Abstract

This essay discusses the written version of an inaugural address by Oldenhuis,and explores the scope which (Dutch)law provides for legal pluralism on the basis of the legal freedom to pursue one's own religious truth and to organize oneself accordingly. This presupposes tolerance of others holding their own truth. It would, however, be a serious mistake and a threat to civil and religious freedom and tolerance to assume that freedom can only exist as long as one does not does not profess truth.
