Abstract

The original article has been corrected. In Fig. 1’s caption and in Section 3 ‘Alarm and uncertainties’, the statement “contrary to what is still claimed in the recent climate literature (e.g., Boers et al. 2025)” has been removed. The authors argue that: The claim of Boers et al. (2025) was about linear systems in the state variable, while our interpretation was that their claim was about systems where the stable fixed point evolved linearly with respect to forcing (Fig. 1c in our paper Rietkerk et al. 2026). They (Boers et al. 2025) do agree that in the latter case ‘critical slowing down’ may occur and early warning signals can be expected, leading to false alarms.” Thus, the original statement has been removed.
