Abstract
Conceptions of education are changing. There is a tendency from whole class, teacher directed instruction towards more constructivist forms of education. Does this development suit the needs of disadvantaged children, especially those of ethnic minorities? We found that schools with a high percentage of ethnic minority children do not successfully incorporate new demands such as room for individual differences, greater pupil independency and the development of general study skills. Probably new strategies have to be developed to make this promising approach more effective for disadvantaged minority pupils on high concentration schools.
