Abstract
Changes in societal structures lead to changes in educational practices. The relationship between both changes however is not always quite clear. I want to show the close relation? ship between social change and educational reform and the necessity of the close analyses of the one to come to the proper reform of the other, by the example of environmental education. I will give an analysis of two societal changes of our modern western society: environmental destruction on the one hand and urbanisation and globalisation on the other and review the different educational answers that were given to this changes. Concluding from the analyses I will argue that a continuing discussion based upon a close analyses of the place of education in a changing society is needed because only this way an outdated education and simplified solutions for serious educational problems can be prohibited.
