Abstract

In 2019 a record number of 3078 parliamentary questions were registered. By way of comparison, at the turn of the century, this number was around 1500 parliamentary questions per year; and in the early 1960s the average number of parliamentary questions was around 200. This paper describes the explosive growth in the number of parliamentary questions in the last five decades and discusses potential explanations of this increase. The most plausible explanation is that asking parliamentary questions is an important way for MPs to be visible in a very volatile political environment.
