Abstract
The work of the late Thoe Thole is introduced in five sections, discussing (1) multiplet theory, (2) the branching ratio, (3) dichroism and sum rules, (4) X-ray photoemission and (5) resonant X-ray scattering. At the end of the paper a complete list of all papers published by Theo Thole is included.
