Abstract
This article describes the trends in society leading to a shift in the presence of risk and protective factors in families. Starting point is family modernization; a process that is viewed both in an optimistic and in a pessimistic way. An inventory of risk and protection that are related to family modernization leads to the conclusion that, though in some domains of family life, risks seem to increase, this is counterbalanced by an increase in the prevalence of protective factors. There always will be families that have to deal with risk factors, but nevertheless a trend seems to be developing that supports an optimistic view on the future of children that grow up in modern families.
