Abstract

This chapter deals with the complex topic of diffusion MRI, exploring its fundamental principles, technical components, and clinical relevance. It begins by elucidating the diffusion process itself, highlighting its underlying mechanisms and dynamics. The subsequent section elucidates how diffusion influences the MRI signal. Then the chapter delves into the practical aspects of diffusion MRI, discussing the application of diffusion weighting gradients and the acquisition of diffusion-weighted imaging data. Specific attention is paid to crucial factors in optimizing image quality. The discussion extends to the clinical domain, with a focus on the utility of diffusion MRI in brain imaging. Key clinical applications, such as the detection of restricted diffusion, are explored, underscoring the value of diffusion MRI in diagnosing various neurological conditions. The chapter concludes by revisiting the foundational concepts of diffusion MRI.
