De brede school: kenmerken, verwachtingen en mogelijkheden

Abstract

Community schools are very popular in the Netherlands and ex-pectations are high, especially with regards to the improvement of students' school careers in social-economic disadvantaged areas. It is unclear, however, what exactly a community school really is. The goals and activities of these schools are diverse, and many different parties are involved (i.e. students, parents, teachers, school, neigh-bourhood). To be able to study the achievements of community schools, more information is needed on the activities and goals of these schools. At the SCO-Kohnstamm Institute of the University of Amsterdam a study was conducted aimed at the construction of a 'typology' of community schools. In this article, the results of this study will be presented and linked to American literature.
