Abstract
Comparative research on bird vocal communication can help generate and constrain hypotheses about the evolution of language. Roughly half of the 11,000 extant bird species acquire their vocalizations through imitation, paralleling infant speech development and contrasting with all non-human primates. Many birds exhibit advanced vocal production and perceptual capacities once thought to be speech-specific. This indicates that speech-like behaviour and cognition do not necessarily constitute an evolutionary stepping stone to human-like language. Birdsong exhibits syntactic organization but lacks semantics, whereas bird calls can be functionally referential and combinatorial, eliciting distinct responses. How such systems relate to human language remains intensely debated.
