Abstract
This article considers social competence as an educational goal from the perspective of learning to participate in a multicultural society. It is argued that contemporary education does not prepare pupils adequately for citizenship. This applies to both advantaged and disadvantaged children from all ethnic groups. Pupils can be adequately prepared for participation in society by paying attention to their cognitive, social and moral development in a balanced, integrated way. The school provides a suitable context for doing this. In order to take advantage of their potential pedagogical space, however, schools must deal with the issue of multiculturality and develop a broad perspective on social competence.
