Abstract
This article shows - starting from A. de Haas' boek on the Dutch theatre in de 18th century - how Joannes Nomsz in his drama Anthonius Hambroek, of de Belegering van Formoza (1775) tries to combine the conventions of the French classicist dramatical theory with new ideas, especially on the national matter and the poetic justice. Moreover Nomsz' play seems interesting because it shows the confrontation between the pagan and the christian world, which results in a critical attitude towards the Dutch colonial policy. In doing so, Nomsz was possibly affected by the play Agon, Sulthan van Bantam (1769) by O.Z. van Haren.
