Abstract
The OH stretching bands of several tertiary alcohols with a (partly) rigid skeleton have been investigated. It is demonstrated that in CCl4 the observed OH vibration is related to the distances OH … X, where X stands for atoms close to OH. The effect of fixation of β-CH2 groups proves to be reducable to changes in the OH … β-H distances. Evidence is found for the presence of twisted methyl groups in t-butanol.
