Abstract
There are many procedures, of varying complexity, for
ranking the members of a social group in a dominance
hierarchy. Roughly, two types of method can be distinguished,
one in which the dominance matrix is reorganized
such that some numerical criterion, calculated for
the matrix as a whole, is minimized or maximized, and
one that aims to provide a suitable measure of individual
overall success, from which a rank order can be directly
derived.
