Abstract
The main objectives of this study are: to provide insight in (1) the initial goals of the Literacy campaign in Ethiopia (1979-199), (2) the efforts made to attain these goals and (3) the gained results as well as encountered limitations. Further, the study tries to learn from the practical lessons resulting from the literacy campaign, so that these might be put to use in similar projects in the future as well. The campaign was also studied in comparison with literacy campaigns in Cuba, Tanzania, Nicaragua and Namibia. This was done to gain insight in the Ethiopian campaign from various perspectives, and it simultaneously provides a broader outlook on literacy campaigns in general.
