Abstract
This study examined whether associations between parental bonds and emotional disturbance were less strong for adolescents with partner relationships, and whether the quality and duration of partner relationships were related to adolescents' emotional disturbance. Longitudinal data were used from a sample of 568 adolescents aged 15 to 19, who where interviewed in 1994 and 1997. Analyses showed significant cross-sectional associations between parental bonds and emotional disturbance, but no systematic longitudinal relationships were found. The link between parental bonding and emotional disturbance was less strong for youths with romantic partners cross-sectionally, but not longitudinally. The quality and duration of romantic relationships were not related to emotional disturbance in this age group.
