Abstract
In a longitudinal study we investigated the relation between behavioral style of 171children and their later involvement in bullying and sociometric status. On the basis of systematic observations and teacher rating scale scores we constructed six different clusters of behavior: 'active-isolates', 'passive-anxious', 'unsociable', 'average', 'socially active/timid' and 'socially-active/aggressive'. Six and eighteen months later we interviewed the children about their own experiences with bullying and their opinion about their peers' involvement in bullying. For the assessment of sociometric status we used both a rating- and a nomination-procedure. The results indicated that there wasa link between the clusters of behavior, later involvement in bullying, and their sociometric status. The children in the groups 'active-isolate' and 'socially active/aggressive' ran the highest risk of later involvement in bullying and rejection by the peers. The results are discussed and recommendations are made for further investigation.
