Conclusions and topics for future research

Abstract

This chapter concludes the book and reflects on the previous chapters. It does so in three steps. First, it identifies some core themes and topics regarding frontline activation practices as these arise from the book. Then, the chapter returns to the main argument of the book, that is, that frontline practices are structured by policy, governance, organization and occupational contexts. It does so by looking at context characteristics in the countries discussed in this book and by analysing some specific activation practices in more detail to show that besides welfare-to-work policies, the other contexts play their own role in shaping activation in practice. In the final part of the chapter, some general lines are suggested along which future research into the frontline delivery of welfare-to-work could be developed.
