Teatro, censura y género en el franquismo: Carlota O'Neill bajo el pseudónimo de Laura de Noves

Abstract

The Archivo General de la Administración holds six unpublished dramatic texts by Carlota O’Neill from the early Post-War Period in Spain which were signed under the pseudonym Laura de Noves. These texts were submitted to censors to request authorization for their staging. Although the censors approved five of the plays with or without deletions, none of them were ever performed. This essay focuses on strategies of the author to adapt to the peculiarities of the Post-War Spanish stage, as well as the reaction of the censors to her texts. In addition, this study analyses the representation of unconventional female characters in her plays. The analysis of the documents and the data collected shows the author’s ability to adjust to the commercial stage of Francoism without compromising her convictions about women’s independence and agency.
