Vragen naar seksueel grensoverschrijdend gedrag binnen instellingen

Abstract

Sexual abuse is common, especially among people with physical, sensory or mental disabilities living in an institution. In a residential institution, patients are dependent on professional caregivers, which is a risk factor for abuse. Sexually transgressive behaviour can also occur among residents. There is increasing evidence for the link between urological problems and a history of sexual abuse. Understanding the relationship between sexual abuse, pelvic floor overactivity and urological problems offers opportunities for trauma processing. This article describes how urologists can apply this knowledge in their work with patients who live in institutions, taking into account the shame and guilt associated with these experiences. Concrete questions and psychoeducation to apply in the consulting room are also provided.
