Abstract
Although my book focuses on valley glaciers, it is not intended
to provide a basic course in glaciology, nor does it claim to
give a state-of-the-art picture of glacier research. It consists
mainly of the personal reflections of a meteorologist who
gradually became interested in glaciers and is written primarily
for persons with a general interest in the physics of the
environment. At the same time, however, the book contains a
wide range of source material that should prove useful in
university courses. Physical processes are described in a
quantitative way and where possible are illustrated with the
help of relatively simple models.
