Abstract
In this study I have investigated prepositions, the way they are treated in grammars and other linguistic publications, and how prepositions are taught in Dutch secondary schools.
Though most of this study relates to prepositions in general, that is language-independently, I primarily focus on Dutch prepositions. Besides there are numerous references to prepositions in other languages, more specifically in English, French, German, Italian and Czech. Now and then this study obviously restricts itself to several examples, as it selects the foreign languages to be discussed, e.g. I have hardly investigated any Scandinavian or Asian languages. In other chapters I have pursued completeness, e.g. by composing a list of as many Dutch prepositions as possible (Appendix A contains 528 of them) and an exhaustive list of fixed prepositional collocations in Dutch (about 4,400 in Appendix B).
