Abstract

The reasons and diagnostic challenges of a pathological examination of the placenta are discussed briefly. This chapter outlines a topographical approach to such an examination. The clinical relevance of placental examination is discussed also. Suggestions are presented of how more robust evidence of clinical significance can be obtained. Interactions between placental pathology, basic science research and clinical correlation will enhance the value of placental pathology.
