Abstract

Surprisingly, career opportunities for Amsterdam booksellers were relatively low at the peak of the Golden Age. The circumstances in this growth phase were propitious, but the survival chances of the average firm were not. Competition was so strong that both new and existing firms had trouble getting by. Only by the time domestic demand stagnated, around 1660, did survival chances augment again, due to the changes in the division of labor and a decline in the number of new firms.
