Abstract
The availability of water for human
consumption and agriculture can no
longer be taken for granted. Various
facets of water stress at different spatial
scales, such as groundwater depletion1,2,
climate change and population increase3,
and glacier and snow melt4,5, have been
recognized as contributors to potential water
scarcity. However, what matters for potential
interventions is an integrated view of all
contributions to water availability at the
river-basin scale.
