Abstract

From the perspective of sustainability, changes in the aquaculture operations of salmon and shrimp are desirable. Nevertheless, such alternatives must comply with the law. Unfortunately, there are as many legal regimes as there are states and blocs of states. Thus, the sheer amount of legislation is staggering. As a consequence, it is only possible to do a legal assessment of specifically described ingredients, processes, techniques or methods for a few key states. This legal report reviews the legal conditions imposed on alternative, potentially more sustainable feed ingredients, processes, techniques and methods in aquaculture fisheries of salmon and shrimp, taking the EU and the U.S. as an example. With regard to feed ingredients, the assessment is focused on food and feed safety. For processes, techniques and methods, other legal fields come into play, in particular maritime law.
