Abstract
Recent experiments by Meyeret al. on the onset of convection in a Rayleigh-Benard cell near the first convective instability can be described as being caused by random noise terms in the currents of heat and momentum, but the amplitude of these terms turns out to be about 105 times as large as would follow from standard fluctuating hydrodynamics.
