Abstract
Van Gemert discusses eighty years of Germanic Studies in Nijmegen, starting with the appointment of the internationally reputed Kosch on the first chair. The international focus and the tension between ‘familiar and foreign’ are dealt with, as well as the main topics of research and the (re)structuring of the curriculum in the succeeding periods. In his conclusion Van Gemert speculates about the future of Germanic Studies.
