Abstract
In the year 2001, the quality of care provided to children in 51 care groups from 39 Dutch day care centers was assessed using the Infant/Toddler Environment Scale (Harms et al., 1990) and compared to the quality of day care as assessed in 1995 in an other sample (Van IJzendoorn et al., 1996). Overall quality and subscale scores for learning activities and for listening and talking were significantly lower in 2001 than in 1995. Day care centers that had been founded within the past six years (all private centers) scored considerably lower than older - mostly subsidized - centers.
