Abstract
What impact do businesses have on the efforts of parents with young children who combine
work and family, and what factors within the business play a role in this? This was
the principal question in this comparative case study of two retailers, a large supermarket
chain and a small group of booksellers. I employed a theoretical framework in which I
combined various theories about power and gender (Komter, 1990; Morée, 1992, a.o).
The employees (2x250) and employers were questioned in postal questionaires about the
family policy and the family culture in their company, 50 employees (26 male, 24 female)
with young children where interviewed about there problemes with combining
work and care and their stategies to cope with these problems. In the analysis I combined
quantitative and qualitative methods.
