Abstract
In the sixties the Netherlands turned from a society organised along religious lines into a secularised society. According to some this signified the victory of reason over belief. At the dawn of the new millennium the Netherlands has become a plural, postmodern society which is explicitly multi-religious. In this introduction to a special issue it is argued that what is new about this situation is the co-existence of traditional and post-traditional, individualised forms of religion. This not only sets a challenge for education in schools and families. It also urges a reconsideration of the (modern) dualism between reason and belief.
