Abstract

This thesis examines a rarely explored dimension of Australian political life: how parliamentarians interpret, perform and embody their roles. This study moves beyond depictions of MPs as mere partisan agents or policy actors, investigating the parliamentarian’s craft as a dynamic practice shaped by competing demands, institutional ambiguities and the enduring tension between representation, legislating and partisanship. Central to this craft is the balance between politics as a profession—rewarding those who hone its practices with discipline and skill—and politics as a vocation, which remains open to all citizens who are prepared to embrace the responsibilities and growth that public service demands. Through this lens, this study examines how MPs negotiate meaning, identity and legitimacy in real time. Drawing on firsthand insights from political practitioners and other key stakeholders—and uniquely incorporating vignettes from his own lived experience as a former MP—the study’s author illuminates how parliamentarians must at once master the professional tools of politics while sustaining the vocational conviction that lends their work purpose and legitimacy. In doing so, the study identifies an essential set of key craft skills and requisite mindset perspectives that are vital to effectively mastering the complexities of parliamentary work. Ultimately, the study demonstrates that politics is neither mechanical nor predictable but a profoundly human endeavour requiring conviction, compromise and resilience. By making visible the intricacies of parliamentary life, this study provides both scholars and aspiring political leaders with a deeper, more authentic account of representative democracy as it is lived and sustained at its core.
