Abstract
Vocational education in The Netherlands is confronted with several problems. Of these problems, the high drop-out rate and the problematic fit between edu-cation and labour market are the most important. The introduction of 'competence-based education' is seen as a major solution for these problems. Although in vocational education many definitions of 'competence-based' circulate, everybody agrees that learning in authentic situations is one of the key ele-ments. Many schools invest in learning outside of schools, in apprenticeship systems or problem-directed education. To function well in these learning en-vironments, students must develop career competencies and a career identity. Therefore, career guidance in school is seen as an essential condition for compe-tence-based education. This article analyzes what schools for vocational education actually do with regards to career education and guidance. It is concluded that investments in career education and guidance at present are still minimal. The main reason for this state of affairs is that in most schools conflicting ideas about a career exist.
