Abstract

More than 100 years ago the discipline of pedagogical science originated in the Netherlands. After a brief description of the history of pedagogy, this paper highlights the scope and focus of the field of pedagogy. We draw on seminal models in the field of education and child and family studies to describe the relations between pedagogy, psychology, psychiatry, and sociology. We conclude that pedagogical science is an empirically normative, action-oriented, and integrative discipline that bridges the broad spectrum of behavioral and human sciences. At its core, the field of pedagogy spans disciplinary to transdisciplinary science, and is uniquely positioned to answer scientific, clinical, and societal questions that support children growing up in a changing society.
