Abstract
The macroscopic Maxwell equations in matter are derived on a quantum statistical basis from the microscopic equations for the field operators. Both the density operator formalism and the Wigner distribution function method are discussed. By both methods it can be proved that the quantum statistical ensemble averages of the microscopic electric and magnetic fields fulfil the usual macroscopic Maxwell equations.
