Abstract

On May 23, 1641 the play Herdoopers anslagh op Amsterdam (Anabaptists' attack on Amsterdam) was performed at the Amsterdam Schouwburg. It was written by the physician and theatre regent P.A. Codde. In this article I question the potential of the play to claim legitimation and recognition for the ancient Catholic elite of the city and to contribute to contemporary debates about city identity, the role of Catholics in this, and the reconsideration of the narrative of the Dutch Revolt.
